POSITION TITLE: Deputy Managing Director (MD), Newark & New York


REPORTS TO: Managing Director, Newark & New York


Per Scholas seeks a Deputy Managing Director to oversee program strategy and operations, external engagement, and internal team leadership for our regional Bronx, Brooklyn, and Newark offices. Partnering closely with the Managing Director,  you will provide vision and leadership in program, budget and team management to enable deeper impact in the local tech and workforce development ecosystems.

Our regional operations train more than 600 students per year for roles in Cybersecurity, IT Support, Systems Administration, and Web Development. We have grown significantly in this market over the past several years, and the Deputy will directly support the Managing Director towards achieving additional regional growth in the coming years.


External Engagement

  • Partner with the MD and national development team to drive the local fundraising strategy. Cultivate new and deepen relationships with existing funders and partners, enabling the region to meet quarterly and annual fundraising targets
  • Prospect for and generate local operating revenue through a diverse range of fundraising activities targeted at individual, institutional, and public sources
  • Serve as a Per Scholas ambassador across the respective Newark and New York nonprofit, workforce development and tech ecosystem, representing Per Scholas in regional meetings, conferences, panels, and media opportunities
  • Partner with the national development team to generate grant requests and reports
  • Oversee grant management for local grants and contracts
  • Follow local and national workforce, business, and tech industry trends to inform student and employer partner needs

Program Strategy & Operations

  • With support from the MD and the regional leadership team, develop and implement the region’s annual operating plan
  • Manage leads of Admissions, Technical Instruction, Career Services & Employer Partnerships, and Youth & Support Services teams to ensure high-quality delivery of tech training for students and alumni
  • Ensure that all program goals are met or exceeded, including outcomes tracking and reporting using Salesforce and other platforms

Internal Team Leadership

  • Serve as a regional liaison with Per Scholas’ national program, finance, communications, development, operations, talent, and social ventures teams
  • Lead a team of five and facilitate regular performance management, professional development, and team meetings
  • Lead special projects as assigned by MD


Professional Requirements

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant professional experience, and a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent practical experience) including:
  • 3-5 years experience with institutional philanthropy and external relationship management
  • 3-5 years managing teams or projects to successful outcomes
  • Experience in workforce development a plus
  • A keen understanding of foundation, corporate, and government funding landscape in the Greater New York and/or  Newark areas
  • Past success linking operational and business functions to strategic objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to build C-level relationships and convert them to partnerships
  • Experience fulfilling goals in ambiguous, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments
  • An inclusive philosophy with experience working with ethnically and socioeconomically diverse communities
  • An understanding of what it takes to build a supportive, collaborative work culture
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate and effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent conversational, public speaking, presentation, and writing skills
  • Customer service orientation with the ability to build and maintain solid internal and external relationships
