Development Consultant (Part-time, Contract)

LOCATION: New York City Metro Area
REPORTS TO: Senior Manager, Development


The Development Consultant will prepare and write letters of interest, grant proposals, reports, acknowledgment letters and other materials that are responsive to donor guidelines, including assembling required documentation and budgets. The consultant will gather information from program staff to articulate goals, activities, anticipated outcomes, successes, challenges, etc. appropriately to funders. There is an anticipated volume of 5 to 7 proposals and/or reports monthly, largely to private foundation and corporate funders.

Contract Summary: Per Scholas seeks a versatile development professional with strong grant writing skills join its fast-paced development team (20 hours weekly). The grant writer will report to our Senior Development Manager for New York, and focus primarily on the New York metro area funding portfolio, with support to our other markets as requested. The consultant will be able to work flexibly between any New York Per Scholas office and his/her home office and will be expected to join team meetings twice per month for one hour, by phone or in New York City. 


  • Keep staff aware of upcoming deadlines
  • Engage in prospect research as requested
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date record keeping in Salesforce, other systems
  • Coordinate with communications staff to ensure consistent language, staying “on brand” and leveraging communications opportunities


Professional Qualifications

  • 5+ years of grant writing or general development experience
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and copy editing skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, both in person and on phone
  • Proven research abilities, including gathering and interpreting data
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment, working both independently and as a team member
  • Experience with Google Apps for Business, ideally experience with Salesforce
  • Comfort working in a diverse, multicultural environment, and sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural differences
